You've just found a box of old Magic cards in the attic, inherited a collection, or simply haven't played in years. One question keeps coming up: are these cards worth anything at all?

The short answer: maybe — and it's worth spending 5 minutes to find out before you give anything away.

Most Magic Cards Are Bulk — But Not All

The hard truth is that the vast majority of Magic cards (commons and uncommons especially) are worth very little individually. However, every collection has potential surprises, and the cards that look the most unremarkable can sometimes be the most valuable.

⚠️ Don't throw anything away before scanning. A battered old rare from 1994 might be worth €50. A foil card from a 2010 set might fetch €30. You can't tell by looking without checking.

What to Look For First

1. The Rarity Symbol

Every Magic card has a small symbol to the right of the card name or in the bottom right of the text box:

  • Gold/Orange symbol: Rare or Mythic Rare — always worth checking
  • Silver symbol: Uncommon — occasionally valuable if heavily played
  • Black/Common symbol: Usually bulk, but old editions can surprise you

2. The Edition

Cards from Magic's early years (1993–2003) are almost always worth more than modern reprints of the same card. Check the set symbol on the right side of the card:

🏛️ Old sets to watch for:

  • Alpha, Beta, Unlimited (1993): The original sets — any card here has value
  • Revised, Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends (1994): Highly collectible
  • Ice Age, Homelands, Alliances (1995–1996): Some staples worth checking
  • Tempest, Urza's Saga era (1997–1999): Several high-value cards

3. Special Treatments

Even a common card can be worth several euros if it has a special finish:

  • Foil cards: Shiny cards are generally worth 2x–10x their normal version
  • Borderless / Full art / Showcase: Premium versions from modern sets
  • Judge Promos / Event cards: Can be worth hundreds of euros

4. Cards That Are Always Valuable

Some cards have maintained strong value regardless of age:

🌍 Fetch Lands

Cards like or — always in demand for competitive play.

💀 Eternal Staples

Cards like or — played in every format.

🌑 Reserved List

Cards like that Wizards has committed never to reprint — guaranteed scarcity.

👑 Power Nine

, and their siblings — the most powerful (and expensive) cards ever printed.

The Fastest Way to Check: Scan Your Cards

Instead of looking up each card manually on Cardmarket (which takes forever), the quickest method is to photograph your cards in batches and let an AI identify and price them automatically.

MTG Trade does this for free. Take a photo of a binder page or a spread of cards, and within seconds you'll see each card's name, edition, and current market price.

💡 Pro tip: Start with your rares and older cards first. If you find anything worth over €5, set it aside before continuing.

Signs Your Collection Might Be Worth More Than You Think

  • Cards from before 2000: Old border design (no reminder text box visible, text goes to the edge)
  • Cards with no set symbol: Very early editions had no symbol at all
  • Cards with the "1st Edition" scroll icon: Not Magic but Pokemon — equally valuable!
  • Cards in foreign languages: Italian, Portuguese or Chinese Magic cards from the 90s can be worth multiples of the English version

What If Nothing Is Worth Much?

That's the most common outcome — and that's fine. A bulk collection still has value as a lot: game stores and experienced players often buy bulk for €0.05–0.10 per card. A box of 500 cards might net €25–50 without any sorting needed.

But you won't know until you check. Scan your collection first, then decide what to do with it.
